Flower Yarn Review: Well-loved Crochet Bouquet Designer Makes Yarn to Fill Missing Gap

Updated: Oct 16, 2024

If my husband got me flowers... honestly I'd be mad. Real flowers are doomed to wilt and I just can't justfy the cost. But if he got me crochet flowers... I think I could get behind that.

Meet Tina from Made With April

One gal who REALLY knows crochet flowers is fellow Canadian, Tina, who runs a crochet flower shop called Made With April.

Recently she revealed that she had been working on making her own yarn line especially for crochet flowers. Let's welcome "Flower Yarn". She put a SMALL amount on her website for sale with a bigger launch coming later in 2024. I bought 4 beatiful colours to try. Here is my Flower Yarn review.

This yarn is in testing mode at time of writing. I will update the blog once it becomes available.

First let's look at the juicy details.

What is the yarn called?

Flower Yarn

How much does it cost?

$3.00 CAD

How many grams per skein?

50 g per skein

What fibres is it made of?

45% cotton / 40% manufactured casein / 15% manufactured rayon

What is the recommended hook/needle?

4-4.5 mm crochet hook or 5.5 knitting needles

Yarn Review

What did I love about Flower Yarn?

  • Low price point.

  • Vibrant colours.

  • Made by a crocheter.

  • Great stitch definition.

  • Strong yarn.

  • Super soft.

  • Filling a gap for accessible cotton-blend yarn in Canada

What could be improved?

  • Packaging is currently inconsistant but I'm sure that will be fixed in final version

  • Yarn is splitty so it can take a little to get used to.

  • I'm not a huge fan of manufactured fibres but I can get passed that.

What did I make?

When you get a yarn called Flower Yarn I knew I had to make at least ONE flower. I don't have the supplies to make wired flowers so I found a little plushie tulip pattern from MonuaDIY on YouTube.

I used a 3 mm hook and did a yarn under, yarn over technique. This would make a super cute key chain or bag charm.

What Can You Make with Flower Yarn?

  • Obviously you could make flowers. I highly recommend checking out Tina's shop for flower patterns.

  • Detailed keychains or bag charms.

  • Small amigurumi

  • Cat toys with catnip inside.

I highly recommend you check out Made With Aprils Shop. If you're fast enough she might still have some of her test skeins available. Otherwise you can look forward to the full launch at a later date.

Have any other yarns your curious about? Send me a note and maybe I'll review it next.
